Dear Colleague,
As of early 2020 (exact date to be confirmed but we are aiming for late January 2020) the operation of the Eye Casualty at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire will change and become by appointment only.
For a patient to be seen in eye casualty, they will have to be referred into the service from a variety of sources including GPs, optometrists and other professionals. Contact with an optometrist will be one of the main sources.
A telephone triaging and appointment system with dedicated lines for optometrists and GPs will be set up by UHCW eye casualty. There will also be an advice line managed by the designated Optometrist and Ophthalmologist within the Eye Department. This will be supported by a program of training by ophthalmologists and optometrists from UHCW.
Prior to the service going live there will be a seminar at the clinical sciences building on November 19 at 7:30 pm. There will be CET points available and it is very important that you attend.
This change is key to the future of eye care in the Coventry and Warwickshire area heading towards improved roles and responsibilities of community optometrists.
I will send you more information as I receive it but felt that you should know as soon possible, as this is a significant change to our future referral pathways.
Kind regards,
Suresh Munyal MSc MCOptom Dip Tp(IP)
